Agricultural Products:
The cereals cover the widest percentage in the total planted area in Çanakkale which are mainly wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Leading cereals are cultivated in Bayramiç, Biga, Çan and Yenice. The cultivation of cereals is generally made under dry agricultural conditions when recent exceptional cases are eliminated. The agriculture can be done 12 months of the year in Çanakkale.
The most important agricultural products after cereals are tomatoes, olives and grapes. Tomato production is 8,8 % of Turkey production .The high quality olive production is in the coastal villages of Ayvacık and Ezine is the main income. Çanakkale's tomatoes are the most famous ones in Turkey . Olive oil is also very famous with its quality.
The viniculture, which has been very important agricultural activity for centuries, continues also nowadays.
Çanakkale is a province, at the same time; peaches, apples, cherries and some fruits are grown because of the productive soil and temperate climate. Apple and cherry of Bayramiç, peach of Umurbey are well known brand names in Turkey.
Arable Land Production and Distribution:
Recently, organic farming has been growing very fast in Çanakkale. As a result of increase in olive tree plantation, olive oil production and export of olive oil has taken place an important role.
According to the statistics of Agriculture Directorate of Çanakkale; as of end of 2005; 7608 farmers of Çanakkale deal with the production of olives. Again; to the same figures; annual olive oil production capacity; which is the sum of the plants’ capacities; is 81.336 tons.
As of end of 2005; the total output of olives are 105.028 tons and in line with this figure; 21.988 tons olive oil. The 98.946 tons olives were appropriate for the production of olive oil and remaining 6.082 tons are edible olives. By means of efforts of the Chamber; the olive and olive oil producers marked big advances in the campaigns such as evolution to the foreign markets, participation in the exhibitions abroad, farmer training, quality and trade mark management, marketing.
Again, the organic agriculture is prevailing day by day, which is followed up by certificates given Agriculture Directorate. This figure is as of end of 2005 is 1291.
Livestock Production and Fisheries:
Livestock is the one of the main income in rural areas of Çanakkale.
Çanakkale is the second place for fishing after Istanbul in Marmara Area region. The Çanakkale Sea is quite rich about fishes.
On the other hand, cultural fishing is also supported as part of “Gökçeada & Bozcaada Agricultural Development & Settlement Project”.
Especially, meat and yoghurt produced in Biga town, cheese produced in Ezine town are most known brands in Turkey. Turkish Patent Institution also assigned “Cheese of Ezine” to the region. |
